Arizona Offering Bald Eagle Nestwatch Program
WHAT
Bald eagle numbers over the past 30 years have grown more than 600 percent in Arizona, thanks in part to the Bald Eagle Nestwatch Program. Come meet the nestwatchers responsible for protecting bald eagles in Arizona while they are nesting and raising young!
The Arizona Game and Fish Department will hold a nestwatch media event, where reporters and photographers will have the opportunity to observe, photograph and interview nestwatchers assigned to a bald eagle nest on the Salt River. Biologists will also be available to provide updates on this year's breeding activity in the state, including the Goldfield nest site.
The Goldfield Breeding Area was established in 2009. Shortly after the eggs hatched, the male of the pair went missing, but the female defied the odds and successfully raised the nestling to fledging. The female found a new mate this year and the eggs are ready to hatch.
For more than 30 years, the Arizona Bald Eagle Nestwatch Program has monitored bald eagle breeding areas that are under heavy pressure from human recreational activities. Nestwatchers will observe from dawn to dusk, collecting data about the eagles' behavior, educating the public, and notifying rescuers of any life-threatening situations for the birds.
