Outdoor Life Honors Camp Compass Academy Founder

ALLENTOWN, Penn. - John Annoni received national recognition when he was included in Outdoor Life magazine's list of 25 most influential people in hunting and fishing for 2008, which was published in the December/January 2009 issue.

Annoni, a sixth-grade math and science teacher at Trexler Middle School in the Allentown School District, is the founder of Camp Compass Academy, a conservation curriculum that earned federal recognition for his program introducing inner-city youth to the outdoors.

According to the information in the article, ''A teacher for 20 years and a lifelong resident of Allentown, Pennsylvania, John Annoni knows how important it is to give inner-city students a chance to get out of the city and into the outdoors."

''Books just weren't cutting it,'' he says. So in 1994, Annoni started a conservation curriculum that grew into Camp Compass Academy.

Open to students in grades 5 to 12, it offers hands-on training in weapons safety and classes ranging from conservation to math. Through these, students earn the privilege of going on hunting and fishing trips made possible by funds Annoni has raised through grants from conservation groups, businesses such as Mossy Oak, Rocky, Under Armour and private donations.

The magazine will honor the Outdoor Life 25 during a special reception at the SHOT Show in Orlando in January 2009.

Todd Smith, editor-in-chief of Outdoor Life, will also announce the winner of the Readers' Choice Award during the ceremony. Online voting is open on http://www.outdoorlife.com/OL25 through Dec. 15.
