National Wildlife Week Celebrations at Salato
Winchester® Ammunition recently pledged a charitable donation to the Youth Shooting Sports Alliance, showing its continued support and commitment to the younger generation of shooters.
FRANKFORT, Ky. - The Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort will celebrate Kentucky's diverse wildlife during National Wildlife Week and Earth Day, April 21 -25. Join the Salato staff for a week full of activities, new exhibits and programs.
During this week, you can make pine cone birdfeeders, learn about native wildflowers or take a birding hike. Visit our Web site at fw.ky.gov for a full listing of special events.
The Salato Center is also giving away free sapling trees to the first 400 visitors on Earth Day, April 22. Varieties include paw paw, red bud, yellow popular and silky dogwood. These trees can help replenish habitat and provide an additional food source for Kentucky's wildlife. In addition to giving back to Kentucky's resources, you will also add beauty to any landscape. The limit is one tree a family, while supplies last.
Also, the winner of the $10,000 Backyard Makeover will be announced at 11 a.m. on Earth Day at the Salato Center. Audience members will have a chance to win a Butterfly Gardening Kit or native plants.
The Salato Center has a variety of native animals for the public to see, including a black bear, bobcats, elk, deer, bison, eagles, snakes and fish. The Center has numerous indoor exhibits and miles of hiking trails open to the public. Fishing is available at two lakes. While some programs may require a registration fee, general admission to the SalatoCenter is free.
