Senators McCain And Obama Vie For Sportsman Vote In Exclusive Field & Stream Interview

09-18-08

NEW YORK - Presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama go head-to-head in the October issue of Field & Stream as they compete for the decisive sportsmen's vote in the upcoming election. With over 38 million Americans identifying themselves as outdoorsmen, issues such as conservation, Second Amendment rights, and the candidates' personal histories as hunters and fishermen will play a pivotal role in shaping the minds of voters this November. Historically, sportsmen tend to vote more based on the issues, rather than party affiliation, making it a critical demographic in this contested presidential election.

"McCain and Obama gave long, thoughtful interviews to Field & Stream because they know sportsmen have a powerful voice," remarked Anthony Licata, Field & Stream's Editor.

During the exclusive interviews, Senators McCain and Obama explain in detail their positions on provocative topics such as gun rights, conservation, drilling on public lands, gun ownership and the environment. Both Senators agreed on some points: that their favorite outdoors activity was hiking; they are both fisherman; and neither is a hunter. However, they varied widely on other issues of importance to sportsmen including the assault weapons ban and best practices for managing our nation's public lands.

Field & Stream Editor Anthony Licata interviewed Senator McCain in New York City; Senator Obama in Lafayette, Ind. The complete interviews along with photos are available online at www.FieldandStream.com, where visitors can also find a photo gallery of Governor Sarah Palin's hunting photos. The interview with Senators McCain and Obama is featured in the October issue of Field & Stream, due to appear at newsstands onSeptember 23.
