Sportsmen Await Impact of Election

Special Report by the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance

With the election of a new President and Congress, this is an important time for sportsmen to watch and remain engaged by talking to their individual elected representatives. It is also important that sportsmen understand that while policy made in Washington, D.C. can affect hunting, fishing, and trapping; policies with the most impact originate in individual state capitols.

Preliminary results show that out of 11 gubernatorial races, only one changed political parties. This indicates a remarkable level of stability at the state government level.  In a nutshell, for many day-to-day issues confronting sportsmen, the outcome of the election does not appear to radically change things.

As of press time, several hotly contested races remain too close to call, but democrats have gained at least five additional seats in the U.S. Senate and 20 in the U.S. House of Representatives. It is incumbent on sportsmen to reach out to new members and make them aware of the issues that concern us.

In the weeks ahead, the USSA will closely monitor key appointments to see what policies are likely to come from the new administration. The USSA will also continue to dig into the results of the election to see how the make-ups of individual state legislatures are looking in its aftermath. The USSA also plans to maintain its close ties with members of both parties at all levels of government so that the voices of sportsmen are heard loud and clear.
