North Dakota Initiative Threatens Sportsmen’s Liberty
North Dakota sportsmen’s liberties are under attack. A group calling itself ‘North Dakota Hunters for Fair Chase’ is circulating petitions to place an anti-hunting initiative on the 2010 General Election ballot. This misleading effort is anti-freedom and anti-private property rights, and ADWA encourages sportsmen to refuse these petitions.
Violating America’s basic principles of private property rights and stripping away sportsmen’s liberty to decide for themselves how and where to hunt, the proposed initiative would ban private big game hunting preserves in North Dakota, a long-standing tradition in the state. Hunting ethics should be decided by individual hunters, not by politically-motivated laws supported by radical animal “rights” groups. In addition, the group behind this initiative falsely advertises preserves as a very small pen or cage, when most preserves amount to thousands of acres.
Initiatives pertaining to hunting laws politicize the state’s wildlife management policies, which is contrary to the North American Model of Wildlife Management that has made North Dakota’s wildlife populations and rich ecosystems the envy of the world. Hunting and wildlife management strategies should always be rooted in science, and not driven by a wealthy few who can produce the most emotionally appealing 30-second television commercial during an initiative campaign.
This initiative effort is supported by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), a Washington D.C.-based lobbying organization that spends $120 million a year in an effort to end all hunting and animal agriculture in the United States. |

ADWA Supports Wounded Warriors in Missouri
Hunter Ridge Ranch in Camdenton, Mo., recently hosted a special Wounded Warrior Freedom Barbecue event that paid tribute to four American soldiers as they returned home after a tour of duty overseas.
Timothy Pool, Jonathan Wilson, Shane Sawmiller and Robert Horne were the honored recipients, and the special five-day event brought together industry professionals, community leaders and concerned citizens that wanted to show their appreciation for the soldiers.
Oscar Hunter, who owns Hunter Ridge Ranch, treated the four Marines to all-inclusive hunts during which the men took red stag, fallow deer, elk and scores of ducks.

HSUS Accused Of Corruption and Racketeering
In a landmark RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) lawsuit certain to have far-reaching implications for the animal rights movement, Feld Entertainment and the Ringling Brothers circus sued the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), its lawyers, and several other animal rights groups last week. The nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) unearthed the lawsuit in federal court records. CCF is making the lawsuit available online at its newest website, www.HumaneWatch.org.
“America’s farmers, ranchers, hunters, fishermen, trappers, research scientists, fashion designers, and restaurateurs have seen for decades watched how the animal rights movement can behave like a mobbed-up racket,” said CCF Director of Research David Martosko.
“But it’s still shocking to see the evidence laid out on paper. In a treble-damage lawsuit like this, a jury could actually do the humane thing and finally put HSUS out of business completely.”

Pennsylvania Elk Test Negative for CWD
Samples taken from the 43 hunter-killed elk during the state's 2009 hunting season have all tested negative for chronic wasting disease (CWD), according to Dr. Walt Cottrell, the Pennsylvania Game Commission's wildlife veterinarian. Samples also tested negative for brucellosis and tuberculosis.
Cottrell noted that the Game Commission still is awaiting the results of CWD testing for the hunter-killed deer samples collected during the 2009 rifle deer season.
"Currently, there are no confirmed or suspected cases of CWD-infected deer or elk in Pennsylvania," Cottrell said. "Conducting these tests on hunter-killed deer and elk is one part of the Game Commission's ongoing efforts to monitor wild deer and elk populations for the presence of CWD
