The American Deer & Wildlife Alliance (ADWA) works to grow the deer and wildlife industries through leadership, education and public awareness. We serve as a national voice for companies, organizations and industry professionals who promote industry growth and support the advancement of wildlife and habitat.

New American Deer & Wildlife Foundation Reaches Youth

Kids DoeFrom sponsoring first-time youth hunts to hosting wildlife talks at elementary schools, the American Deer & Wildlife Alliance’s mission to educate and involve youth in wildlife and conservation issues has generated enormous interest and support. So much so, that ADWA has now established the American Deer & Wildlife Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization to coordinate and manage all youth activities.

Working in conjunction with the America Deer & Wildlife Alliance™, the mission of the new Foundation is to fund and manage youth programs dedicated to increasing participation in hunting and fishing, outdoor education and wildlife conservation.

“Children are more disconnected from nature than ever before in our country’s history, and we believe that the health of our deer and hunting industry as well as our American outdoor traditions are at serious risk,” says John Meng, spokesman for the American Deer & Wildlife Alliance. ”Sales of fishing and hunting licenses have consistently declined for the past 20 years, and less license revenues means less funding for state-funded conservation efforts and it means a shrinking customer base for businesses within the industry. Everything begins with the children and we need to reach them now.”

In its other activities, the American Deer & Wildlife Foundation will publish Spikes Magazine, host and sponsor numerous outdoor educational classes and events, and organizes ‘first hunts’ and affordable hunting opportunities through its New Hunterz™ program.

Indiana Deer & Elk Farmers Support ADWA

The American Deer & Wildlife Alliance (ADWA) welcomes the Indiana Deer & Elk Farmers Association (IDEFA) as its newest ally in promoting America’s hunting heritage and in educating landowners to the benefits of raising alternative livestock such as elk and deer.

“Our partnership with ADWA will allow our membership to support ADWA’s sponsorship of Keith Warren’s Deer & Wildlife Stories on the Outdoor Channel and its efforts to promote the cervid industry on a national scale,” says IDEFA President John Murrell. “We encourage every other alternative livestock association as well as individual deer and elk breeders to watch and support Deer & Wildlife Stories.”

“Deer & Wildlife Stories is the first nationally broadcast show to promote the cervid industry and we are extremely pleased to receive the support of IDEFA,” says ADWA spokesman John Meng. “The show is extremely informative and educational, and it provides a public stage to promote the issues that are critical to the future success and growth of our industry.”

“We can never start too soon when it comes to sharing the beauty of nature and wildlife with children,” says ADWA President John Meng. “Whether we’re showing them how deer antlers grow, a cougar skull, a bear skin or a rattlesnake’s rattle, the kids have an intense excitement and awe for the natural world. With ADWA, one of our top priorities is to nurture that enthusiasm so children will grow up with an appreciation of natural habitat and wildlife.”

IDEFA is a non-profit organization representing deer and elk farmers and hunting preserves in the State of Indiana. The organization is dedicated to preserving the agricultural heritage in Indiana and educating landowners to the lucrative potential of raising deer and elk. Whitetail Sales Pony Up for Texas Deer Association

TDAThe San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo featured more than just hooves and horns; it also featured some of the state’s largest deer antlers. More than 1,000 whitetail enthusiasts, deer breeders, ranchers and exhibitors saddled up for the Texas Deer Association’s first Superior Genetic Whitetail Deer Auction of 2009. The two-day event generated more than $860,000 as part of a statewide industry that funnels more than $650 million annually into the Texas economy.

As the No. 1 resource for premium whitetail sales in Texas, the Texas Deer Association (TDA) holds several premium deer auctions during the year as well as numerous deer management and other educational workshops.

ADWA Special Report: Guns & Ammo Suggest Industry Uncertainty

GunsFrom tree stands to scent lures, firearms to feed, the deer and wildlife industry feeds and grows on sportsmen’s insatiable demand for bigger trophies and better hunting experiences. Those that produce big deer and those that produce the gear to hunt them are uniquely tied together and irrevocably share the same fate during good times and bad.

But are we facing good times or bad? One industry indicator — gun sales — is blasting all industry sales forecasts and inventory on many gun models are non-existent. According to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), the number of firearm purchaser background checks for the month of December 2008 (1,523,426) increased 24 percent increase over the number of checks December 2007 (1,230,525). The sharp increase follows a 42 percent rise in NICS checks for the preceding month, the highest number of checks in NICS history.

Many industry analysts suggest that, despite a weak economy, gun sales are booming largely due to public fear that new lawmakers will enact a gun ban on law-abiding Americans. A recent survey of hunters and target shooters conducted by Southwick Associates Inc., supports that theory. The poll showed that 80 percent of respondents expect that purchasing firearms will become more difficult under the new administration and congress.

Breeders Get New ‘Deer Connection’

Deer ConnectionNetworking is still one of the most successful methods for marketing and increasing business for those in the deer industry, and the Texas Deer Association (TDA) is pleased to announce the launch of an all-new online directory service for deer breeders — Deer Connection (www.DeerConnection.com).

Deer Connection offers deer farmers great opportunities to locate other breeders; search by specific genetics, species and ranches; review deer pedigrees, post classified ads to buy and sell deer, receive current industry news, and promote their businesses and their deer.

“As one of the country’s largest state associations to represent deer breeders, the TDA is dedicated to promoting and growing the deer industry by facilitating the marketing efforts of deer breeders. Deer Connection is another useful tool with which TDA can promote the industry and provide a valued service to its members,” says Karl Kinsel, executive director of the Texas Deer Association. “We’re particularly excited to provide this new service on a national scale. Deer Connection is not exclusive to Texas. Any breeder in any part of the country can benefit from the online service.”

Basic directory listings on Deer Connection and inclusion in the Breeder Locator service are free to all TDA members. However, Deer Connection offers a Premium Membership in which a breeder receives even greater benefits, such as pedigree charts, unlimited classified ads, images and information about their deer and their business. Breeders wanting to register for premium benefits may do so directly online by following the registration process. Non-TDA members wanting to receive a basic listing and be part of the Breeder Locator, can join TDA with an ‘Active’ level membership at www.TexasDeerAssociation.com and receive the free service.

For more information on becoming a member of TDA and/or Deer Connection.com, please call 512.331.8618 or email john@texasdeerassociation.com

Texas Ranchers and Farmers Struggle in Drought

By James C. McKinley Jr.

BEEVILLE, Tex. — Austin Brown II kicked the sandy dirt near a feedlot with his spurred boot and surveyed the land his family has ranched for three generations.

Sunstein has extensive public record of supporting animal rights and has even suggested the banning of hunting. So many sportsmen and legislators are concerned with the possibility of pro- hunting, fishing and trapping regulations of never seeing the light of day due to ‘administrative technicalities.’

Most years the first green shoots of spring and pink bursts of paintbrush flowers would be rising from the soil by now. Nothing meets his eye but brown grass, dried up oaks and dust billowing in the wind.
