The American Deer & Wildlife Alliance (ADWA) works to grow the deer and wildlife industries through education and public awareness. We serve as a national voice for companies, organizations and industry professionals who promote industry growth and support the advancement of wildlife and habitat.
Time to Get in the Game
Remember the excitement you felt on your first hunt or that tidal wave of anxiety you feel when you see a monster buck emerge from the trees. Now imagine never having that feeling again. Never to again see the sunrise from a tree stand. Imagine that no child will experience the thrill of the outdoors like you did. Like you still do.
As bleak as that picture is, that is exactly what’s at stake today. Nothing less.
Today, it’s estimated that 90 percent of sportsmen do not belong to a wildlife-focused organization. Similarly in the deer and wildlife industry, insiders suggest that up to 90 percent of game ranchers and deer farmers do not belong to an organization defending their right to raise deer and exotics.
This is extremely shortsighted, shameful and a serious threat to the future of our industry. Too many deer breeders and sportsmen are on the sideline when we desperately need everyone to get in the game.
ADWA and other organizations are operating with limited resources defending your liberty to hunt, building ‘mainstream’ awareness for the deer industry and working to bring deer and wildlife education to our youth.
And we are up against overwhelming odds. We’re up against an opponent in the HSUS alone that has tens of millions of dollars to pour into anti-hunting campaigns and lobbying politicians year after year. We’re seeing hunters fight hunters over preferences on where and how to hunt, and our youth are more disconnected from wildlife and nature than at any time in our nation’s history.
Now is the time we need everyone on the same team.
If you’re a deer breeder or a game rancher, please support your national associations, such as the North American Deer Farmers Association and the Exotic Wildlife Association, as well as your state associations. If you’re sportsman and want to help preserve our American outdoor traditions for the next generation, join ADWA.
It’s time to act. It’s time we all get in the game.

Deer & Wildlife Groups Seek Great Lakes Wolf Delisting
Whitetails of Wisconsin, Safari Club International (Wisconsin chapters) and other sportsmen groups have filed a formal petition with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to remove the Western Great Lakes wolves from the Endangered Species List.
The petition incorporates information regarding the wolves’ population status from similar petitions filed by the Departments of Natural Resources in Minnesota and Wisconsin in March and April, 2010. This information includes population numbers of 3,000 wolves now present in Minnesota, 460-500 in Wisconsin and 430 in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This is a significant increase in wolf population from the 1970s, when they were placed under Endangered Species Act (ESA) protection.

GMS Announces New Connectivity with DNA Solutions
The industry leader in game management software, GMS®, has unveiled its all-new ‘DNA Connection’ software module that allows GMS users to digitally submit documentation into the North American Deer Registry. The new module is the latest innovation by GMS to facilitate and service the deer industry by creating a more efficient means of delivering and processing DNA samples with DNA Solutions, an Oklahoma-based company that provides genotyping services to North American whitetail deer breeders and wildlife enforcement agencies.
The DNA Connection software allows GMS users to now digitally transmit DNA request forms directly to DNA Solutions. The software automatically assigns a number to the submission and the user simply tags the physical DNA sample with that number. The system eliminates manually completing the documentation and supports accuracy in recording the data at DNA Solutions.

Mexican President Calls for U.S. Gun Ban
While Mexico’s prohibitive gun laws prevent law-abiding citizens from having firearms for protection against criminals and dubious governments, Calderon recently spoke to a joint session of Congress and encouraged U.S. lawmakers to reinstate a federal ‘assault weapon’ ban.
"[I]f you do not regulate the sale of these weapons in the right way, nothing guarantees that criminals here in the United States with access to the same power of weapons will not decide to challenge American authorities and civilians," said Calderon.
The Mexican president also misinformed Congress, claiming that violence in Mexico rose significantly after the U.S. ban expired in 2004. In fact, Mexico's murder rate has been stable since 2003 and remains well below rates recorded previously. However, he did not explain why violent crime has declined significantly in the U.S. since the ban expired, or how a ban on flash suppressors and bayonet mounts relates to drug thugs in Mexico or anywhere else.

CWD Not Found in Pennsylvania Samples
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) was not detected in samples taken from hunter-killed deer during the state's 2009 hunting season, according to Dr. Walt Cottrell, Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife veterinarian.
In 2009, 4,029 samples from hunter-killed deer were tested, and CWD was not detected. This marked the eighth year for testing hunter-killed deer. In total, more than 26,000 deer have been tested. CWD was not detected in any samples from previous years.
Results showing that the CWD tests of hunter-killed elk from 2009 were all negative were announced on Feb. 17.
"We are pleased to report that Pennsylvania continues to have no confirmed or suspected cases of CWD in wild deer or elk," Cottrell said. "By conducting these tests from a random sample of hunter-killed deer and on all hunter-killed elk, we help to assure ourselves and the general public that it is unlikely that CWD is present in wild deer and elk in the state."
