ADWA Special Report: Death Warrant on Exotic Species

Exotic Wildlife AssociationA death warrant has been issued on several exotic species, and ADWA needs your support to save these magnificent animals and preserve private property rights.

Three antelope species —the scimitar-horned oryx, dama gazelle and addax — were the subject of special rules that were adopted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on September 2, 2005. Although these three animals are classified as an endangered species, these special rules made it possible for owners of captive herds to continue to engage in activities including the purchase and sales of the animals. The special rules effectively made it possible for ranchers to breed and freely trade these animals on ranches across the United States without the USFWD permitting process.

In fact, the program has been so widely successful that it now fuels a $1.3 billion industry and thousands of jobs mostly in rural America.

Deer & Wildlife Stories Switches to Pursuit

Deer Wildlife StoriesKeith Warren and his acclaimed “Deer & Wildlife Stories” television show, sponsored by the American Deer & Wildlife Alliance, is moving to the Pursuit Channel in 2010. With more than 25 years in outdoor programming, Warren brings a wealth of knowledge and experience coupled with a deeply held conviction for passing on the traditions of an outdoor lifestyle.

“My mission is to unify sportsmen no matter how they hunt, what they hunt or where they hunt. In order to protect the future of hunting, sportsmen must unite and realize that if we don't, the hunter/sportsmen will be the next endangered species.” Warren said. “The best way to do that is by looking for a common thread that connects us all.”

Warren believes that the best available platform for communicating that common thread is through programming on the Pursuit Channel. “Pursuit Channel is connecting with the blue collar sportsmen that other networks seem to have left behind. The diehard outdoorsmen and women of our country are craving outdoor programming they can relate to,” said Warren.

Conservation Groups Call for Block on ‘Regulatory Czar”

Fifteen of the nation’s leading conservation and sportsmen organizations sent a letter today to all U.S. Senators requesting they oppose the nomination of Cass R. Sunstein to head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA).

In the letter, the organizations express deep reservations about Sunstein’s views on animal rights and hunting. Sunstein has been quoted as saying, “we might ban hunting altogether, at least if it’s sole purpose is human recreation” as well as his discussions about offering animals the rights to sue humans.

No CWD Found in Florida

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has not found any evidence of chronic wasting disease (CWD) after extensive testing of the state’s white-tailed deer population.

The FWC tested 582 free-ranging deer during the past year and more than 4,000 deer during the past seven years, with no CWD-positive results.

“While we can never say that Florida is entirely free of the disease without testing every deer, this sample size gives us confidence that if CWD is present in Florida, it is at low levels,” Dr. Mark Cunningham, FWC’s wildlife veterinarian, said. “However, even low numbers of CWD-positive deer would be cause for concern, so we plan to continue testing for the foreseeable future.”

Deer Industry Racks Up Sales

By William Pack, San Antonio Express-News

For Sheldon Grothaus, deer are a significant part of his life.

“I raise them and hunt them and sell ranches with deer on them,” said Grothaus, who owns Texas Ranch Sales in Hondo and two ranches were deer are bred.

While the nation's economic woes have caused bookings for the upcoming hunting season to slow and real estate sales to soften, they haven't kept Grothaus' breeding operations from setting revenue records this year or convinced him he's chosen the wrong industry as a livelihood.
