Michigan Isolates First Case of CWD |
Two weeks after Michigan confirmed its first ever case of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), the long days of uncertainty for Michigan deer breeders appear to be nearing closure. So far, state officials have found no evidence of chronic wasting disease in wild deer, nor in the four deer moved from a Kent County farm where the disease was first found. As a result of the continued positive news, state officials are considering lifting the statewide quarantine.
Michigan state veterinarian Steve Halstead explains this is certainly good news for Michigan deer breeders and a plan is being developed to begin easing the quarantine of some of the state's 559 deer breeding farms. The farms and facilities with the cleanest records and without ties to the infected farm could see their quarantine lifted by the end of September.

Attendance and Sales Boom for Deer Industry |
Higher fuel and feed prices have worried some 'experts' on the continued growth of the deer industry, but there was only excitement and frenzy at the state's largest-ever deer sale at the 10th Annual Texas Deer Association's Convention & Trade Show. From attendance to deer sales to grand auction, the 2008 TDA convention set new records across the board and was, by all accounts, the most successful convention in the association’s history.
Held at the Westin La Cantera Resort & Hotel in San Antonio, the TDA Convention saw nearly a 30 percent increase in attendance from 2007, and the event's 2008 Superior Genetics Whitetail Deer Auction exceeded expectations by delivering $1.4 million dollars in sales. In addition, the TDA Grand Auction nearly doubled its revenues from the previous year’s totals.

USDA Forecasts Robust Corn and Soybean Crops |
Despite this summer’s severe flooding in the Midwest, U.S. farmers are on pace to produce the second largest corn crop and fourth largest soybean crop in history, according to the Crop Production report recently released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
At the start of this year’s growing season, food shortages and huge economic losses were the predominate forecast, especially with corn. Corn has long been an important feed used in meat production and in the deer and hunting industries for non-traditional livestock such as deer, elk and exotic game. In recent years corn has also increased in importance as ethanol made from corn has become a government-mandated gasoline additive.

ADWA Youth Hit Bulls-Eye |
More than two dozen children and their families received a fun introduction to archery and bow hunting this weekend as part of the new youth initiative sponsored by the American Deer & Wildlife Alliance (ADWA). The Austin Bow Hunting & Archery Clinic, co-sponsored by the Texas Deer Association, was held at Archery County in Austin and provided introductory instruction to kids, ages six to 15.
“Families drove from as far as Fort Worth to participate, and we appreciate their support as ADWA strives to promote youth outdoor activities and continue conservation awareness,” said Annie Jones, ADWA director of operations. “It’s important to introduce hunting and other outdoor activities to our kids, so that we can preserve our hunting and outdoor heritage that is so uniquely American. To see a five-year-old girl shoot her first bow put smiles on everyone’s faces.”
Highlights of the event included: two hours of archery instruction led by instructor Eric Pack, raffle items and ‘free stuff’ for the kids. Lauren Perkins from Lampasas, Texas, was the big winner of The Game Gurney by Hunting’s a Drag (www.gamesled.com), the industry’s top tool for easy game extraction and protecting trophy game across the harsh terrain; while five other kids won waterproof bow hunting journals donated by Rite in the Rain (www.riteintherain.com).
Attendees also received goody bags containing ADWA’s SPIKES Magazines, Frisbees donated by the Amateur Trapshooting Association (www.shootata.com), and various other informational material and fun stickers.

SCI Victory for Desert Bighorn Sheep in Arizona |
An Arizona Federal District Court recently ruled in favor of sheep conservation on the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona, a clear victory for Safari Club International (SCI) and Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF)
Judge Mary Murguia granted SCI and SCIF’s motion for summary judgment and denied the motion of Wilderness Watch and several other groups that sought to remove two water developments. The water sources, restored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will help to conserve the refuge’s dwindling desert bighorn sheep population. The court also entered judgment for the FWS and the State of Arizona.
