ADWA Announces Support for Saving Rare Antelope Species

Exotic Wildlife AssociationThe American Deer & Wildlife Alliance has announced its support of the Exotic Wildlife Association and its appeal of a ruling by Federal Judge Henry Kennedy Jr. of the U.S. District Court, Washington, DC that threatens the extinction of three rare antelope species which have prospered in the United States.

In July 2009, Judge Kennedy ruled that scimitar-horned oryx, dama gazelle and addax that are born and raised in the United States will no longer be exempted from their listing on the endangered species list. The ruling overturns a special rule put in place by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Department that allowed the three antelope species to be born, raised and freely traded in the United States without the USFWD permitting process.

As a result, ranchers who have owned and managed these animals for years will be required to cease all breeding, transport, culling or other management activities without explicit approval from the federal government.

Youth Score Bullseye in ADWA Archery Clinic

Alicia ClementsIn recognition of National Hunting & Fishing Day on September 26, 2009, the American Deer & Wildlife Alliance (ADWA) hosted nearly 30 children and members of their families at the Second Annual ADWA Bow Hunting & Archery Clinic in Austin, Texas.

The event was held at Archery Country, the oldest archery store in Austin, Texas, and provided introductory archery instruction to kids, ages six to 15.

“The ADWA Youth Bow Hunting Clinic was a huge success again this year, and Archery Country was extremely generous to let us completely take over the shop for youth education,” say Alicia Clements, operations manager for ADWA. “ADWA’s primary mission is to promote and introduce outdoor activities and wildlife-related issues to our children. At no time in our history have our youth been so disconnected from nature and we feel it’s critically important to preserve an outdoor heritage which is so uniquely American.”

Deerstore.com Partners with ADWA

Deer Wildlife StoriesDeerstore.com has partnered with the American Deer & Wildlife Alliance to help preserve wildlife environment and to support the deer industry, one of the fasting growing industries in rural America. Well-known for its one-of-a-kind, patented Deerhandler™, Deerstore.com is a staunch advocate for greater youth education about nature and for well-planned farms, known as ‘Nature Agri-Parks,’ which provide tremendous environmental benefits.

“An industry built around nature and our North American cervids will ultimately result in becoming part of the wildlife and environmental solution rather than part of the problem,” says Len Jubenville, an Alberta native and founder of Deerstore.com. “I believe that the more Nature Agri-Parks we can build in North America, the better chance we have at saving our planet and ourselves. I’m proud to work with the American Deer & Wildlife Alliance to achieve those goals.”

CSU Receives $2.5 Million Grant for CWD Study

Colorado State University has received a $2.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to study the transmission of chronic-wasting disease in wildlife -- research that could help scientists understand how other diseases spread.

CSU scientists first identified CWD in deer in northeastern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming in the 1960s. It can cause fatal neurological damage in species of the deer family and is similar to mad cow disease in cattle.

Researchers at the Fort Collins university are working on ways to predict how the disease spreads.
